Imagine restricting your trick-or-treating to only 20% of the houses. Do you think you'll get as much candy, or the best candy, by skipping 80% of the houses? Of course not. Yet, that's what project labor agreements do to your construction project bidding. They dramatically reduce the number of bidders to union contractors (and unions represent only one in five construction workers.) The union firms know they have less competition and so have less incentive to submit competitive bids. Meanwhile, you end up with fewer bidders and higher prices. It's like getting loose candy corns and no full-sized candy bars!
