The 2020 stats are in on the Massachusetts construction workforce. Per www.unionstats.com, 83.5% of construction workers in Massachusetts chose to work for open shops, up from 81.3% in 2019.
On the flip side, just 16.5% of construction workers decided union membership was for them, down a full two points.
We often ask why so few construction workers join organized labor if it's such a great deal. We think the pay and benefits paid to merit shop employees is among the top reasons why 4 out of 5 construction workers choose non-union employers.
